Shifting Culture Through Raising Shared Consciousness

People development has long been a priority for Cisco. When it became apparent that leaders lacked the skills, tools, and awareness to shift the organisation’s culture, Cisco UK & Ireland approached us for support that went beyond the standard leadership training familiar to most. What followed was a programme with far-reaching consequences for people and culture across EMEA.

Company Overview

Cisco EMEA is part of Cisco Systems Inc, an American multinational technology conglomerate that develops, manufactures and sells networking hardware, telecommunications equipment and other high-technology services and products. With 73,000 employees and a $48B global turnover, Cisco is the largest networking company in the world.

The Programme

Our collaborative approach with the Cisco Learning & Development team was crucial in fostering leaders' support for the programme and stakeholder enthusiasm for future roll-out.

Historically accustomed to traditional, classroom-style methods, participants experienced a highly experiential and interactive approach this time. The 6-month Conscious Leader programme, undertaken by 12-14 person cohorts, raised leaders' awareness, enabling them to consciously choose and create their impact.

The 2020 Covid pandemic required a shift to 100% online delivery, challenging participants and coaches to adjust their whole approach to learning and delivery during challenging times.

Whether online or in-person, participants embraced opportunities to improve in numerous areas: delegation, decision-making, conversations, customer relationships, team engagement, conflict management, creativity inspiration, and stretching beyond their comfort zones. This programme helped them build healthier, more trusting relationships and gain the self-confidence to bring authenticity and power to all interactions.

The Results

By working very closely with the pilot group we gained immediate, honest feedback enabling us to hone the design and adapt our approach as the programme was set to scale. Their early involvement drove high engagement throughout and a shared conviction that this leadership programme would add huge value, both for participants and Cisco.

From 2012 – 2020, 10% of the entire Cisco EMEA population graduated through their Conscious Leadership and its successor, the Courageous Leader programme: an integration of emphasis on raised awareness coupled with bold action for change.
